Space Nursing Community
Space nursing is our community practice where we create art interventions in collaboration with a symbiotic other-than-human agent – lichen. We chose lichen as a symbol for rituals of reclaiming abandoned spaces.

If you want to join Space Nursing Community, you are probably fascinated by lichen and abandoned spaces as well! We would love to share our knowledge how to make your own bio-paint ant give examples how you can make installations. The bio-paint was made during experimentation, and we came up with the final version of the bio-paint recipe:
- Main ingredient is locally collected lichen 100-400 ml.
- 500 ml yogurt
- 2 tbsp agar powder
- 1/3 cup flour;
- 1//2 sugar syrup;
Blend the mixture with a hand or blender until becomes smooth. You’ll want it to have a paint-like texture. Add extra flour until the consistency is right.
How to apply lichen bio-paint:
- Find an abandoned building or space.
- Select a spot. Lichens need light for photosynthesis, but avoid constant direct sunlight. Ideally find a place that is at least a little bit covered from the rain.
- Create a geometrical shape using an outdoor duct tape.
- Apply a thick layer of bio-paint using a paint brush.
- Check the weather. Avoid spreading the mixture on a rainy day.
How to upload your installation to the Space Nursing Community map:
- Take a picture of your intervention.
- Add a pin and create a title in the map which you can find there: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=12RSG6-liIi0U_GWj635eXTV8RwcmyuE&usp=sharing
