Urban Velocities
Mentor: Vano KsnelashviliAuthor: Laura Norkūnaitė
In this years’ Experiments’ platform Laura delves into the visible and invisible urban layers, whose dynamics inevitably affect urban life. Her research seeks to reveal the complexity of urban velocities through the various layers of urban elements. Analysing networks of infrastructure, nature, history and urban form, it searches for the human and non – human principles and exceptions that shape the rhythm of different spaces.
Reflecting upon Italo Calvino’s described city of Leonia that refashions itself everyday with piles of new things, Laura contemplates – is this kind of abundance a virtue? How does the speed of urban processes correlate with the value of its so-called abundance? Does the lack of knowledge or observation excuse us from the responsibility? The experiment aims to rethink how by altering these velocities, a chance to enhance cultural and natural processes arises. By utilising the notions of flâneur and dérive in the urban environment, Laura aims to extract the abundance of velocities that are not necessarily noticed and take one more look at human activity to realise the differences.
